“Successful collaboration relies on trust and long-standing relationships”, but how can we ensure this in the long-term? We discuss the reasons behind dwindling research collaboration and the importance of building global communities of researchers to guarantee mutual success and big rewards.

Last week Vertigo Ventures exhibited and spoke at the three-day AESIS Impact of Science Conference, delivered from Cape Town, South Africa.

Impact can take many different forms. At the simplest level, these impact types can cover social, environmental and economic issues.

Universities and the academic sectors more generally, with their broad remit around the creation and dissemination of knowledge and their unique position in society, have a critical role to play in the achievement of the SDGs. Education, research, innovation, teaching, public engagement and leadership will be essential in helping society to transform into pathways of sustainable development.

Times Higher Education is set to launch the world’s first university impact ranking. The initiative – the first global attempt to document evidence of higher education impact – is designed to capture unique new insights on universities’ work towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Universities contribute a huge amount to society, and this data can offer a new perspective on how they’re addressing some of the most pressing global issues. This work has never been fully explored in the past, and has never been recognised in global rankings. The need and desire for clear, new metrics on impact is strong, and while this is a highly challenging area of data collection, it’s also an important and necessary step forward.
