Background

In September 2015, world leaders at the UN unanimously adopted Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, one of the most ambitious and important global agreements in recent history. At the heart of the agenda are the 17 SDGs – which include providing inclusive and equitable quality education, achieving gender equality and fostering innovation – and their 169 targets. The SDGs are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

For the goals to be reached, the UN envisions that everyone needs to do their part: governments, the private sector, civil society and the general public. Universities and the academic sectors more generally, with their broad remit around the creation and dissemination of knowledge and their unique position in society, have a critical role to play in the achievement of the SDGs. Education, research, innovation, teaching, public engagement and leadership will be essential in helping society to transform into pathways of sustainable development.
